I am building an app for iphone using unity3d that will allow the user to download files as in app purchases. Each in app purchase would be like 1 mb. I have two questions.

  1. How would I protect the content. Unity3d can send a url or a form to webfaction, but what would be a good way to check that the request is coming from the app?
  2. How do I deal with sudden increases in download demand -- say the app is successful and millions of people try to download an in app purchase during a month. Does webfaction have a feature that would automatically add more servers and load balance them. Or would I have to use another service besides webfaction?

Right now I just have a basic webfaction account.

  1. You would need to have some mechanism in your website (web app) to detect this. You would likely need to include something in the headers which you can then detect on your site to indicate that the request is legit and from a trusted source.
  2. With shared hosting there it is difficult to accommodate a sudden huge load spike. Our systems won't scale automatically, so the best you can do is have several machines on your account which are then load balanced across. You can find more information on that here:

http://docs.webfaction.com/user-guide/multiple.html#using-an-additional-server-for-load-balancing

Sorry that my answers are quite general, but there is no easy answer for either of your questions unfortunately.
