I am probably barking mad here but...

in crontab I have the line

12 3 * * * ~/webapps/projectname/projectname/credit_check.py

how can I drive this to see what happens at runtime?

If you mean you want to see the result of the script when it runs, then change your crontab to include some output redirection, like this:

12 3 * * * ~/webapps/projectname/projectname/credit_check.py >> ~/logs/user/cron.log 2>&1

If you do that, any output (expected or otherwise) will be logged to ~/logs/user/cron.log.
