I am assuming the following:

  1. dump your database regularly.
  2. copy an encrypted version of the dump in a strictly reserved folder.
  3. copy encrypted file offsite.
  4. delete the dump file.

Anything I am missing? Which encrypt tool could I use in webfaction for the job?

Any opinion is welcome!

Thanks, chr

You might want to add 'copy offsite' to step 2, either a script which runs on your local machine to pull the file down or a script on the server to push the file someplace else. Keeping backups offsite is recommended for maximum redundancy.

Thanks John, I added it. Do you know which tool WebFaction provides for encryption? Thanks!

GnuPG is installed on all our servers, which you can use to easily encrypt and decrypt a file.
