My goal is to compare the performance of two different queries.

I wanted to time each query using something like:

mysql> SELECT ...
mysql> show profiles;

ERROR 1289 (HY000): The 'SHOW PROFILE' feature is disabled; you need MySQL buil with 'enable-profiling' to have it working

How can I time a mysql query?
