WebFaction
Community site: login faq

I've just installed a new website with Wordpress 3.4.2 (both installed from the Webfaction Control Panel). When I go to the wp-admin page it accepts the login and password, but instead of going to the dashboard, returns me to the same login page.

There's no error message if I use the correct password. If I put something else in, I get the normal password error box, so presumably the password check is working at some level.

Any thoughts as to what might be wrong? I've tried deleting and reinstalling wordpress, but the behaviour is consistent.

You should first clear your browser's cookies, cache and any authentication sessions you might have against your blog and then that your system date, time, and time zone settings on your workstation are correct. Incorrect settings can cause the login cookie to expire immediately after it has been set.

Then, check that the site url variable is correctly set. You can either check the wp_options table in your database, or temporary set it in your wp-config.php file by adding the following line, somewhere near the top:

define('SITE_URL', 'http://example.com');

If that doesn't work, then please open a support ticket so we can have a look at your configuration.

In case anyone else has this problem, I found this on the wordpress forum (http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic/11865) which solved the issue.

Add this as the first line of wp-config.php, before the //** MySQL settings:

@define('ADMIN_COOKIE_PATH', '/');

I'm not sure why it works, but I can now access the dashboard.
