I'm following Webfaction's instructions to setup a "static app (no .htaccess)" for my static media as part of a Django deployment.

http://docs.webfaction.com/software/django/getting-started.html#create-a-website-with-django-and-static-media-applications

The instruction numbered "7. e. In the URL field, enter static." There is no URL field in the control panel's Create App form that I can see. Only an "extra info" field for nginx max expires option.

I want my static media served from a URL under my main domain like: www.example.com/static/

How/where to I configure this URL stub. Any hints/advice are appreciated.

The URL path is set when you add the app to the website, not when you create the app.

You can set it by editing your site at https://my.webfaction.com/websites/

Hope that helps!
