Since MongoDB is becoming increasingly popular, instead of having everybody run their own private instance, wouldn't it be a better idea for WebFaction to host a common instance for everybody?

Of course people can still run their private instance if they want to, but for the many of us who do not require very much customization, a shared instance can actually be more convenient and less resource intensive.

We don't currently have any plans to provide a shared MongoDB installation.

There are a few reasons for this. First, we're not seeing a very large number of private mongodb instances running on average on our servers. Also, MongoDB is designed to use a large amount of memory; the resident memory used increases with time and it would be difficult to ensure that one user would not consume far more memory than others would (without configuring the MongoDB instance to thrash excessively).
