Is there already an automated way to periodically get email from a mailbox handled elsewhere, without having to setup a cron job or similar?

No, you would set up a cronjob to fetch the messages, I would use imapcopy as the application to set up with cron to sync the mailboxes.

If your external mail host provides forwarding features similar to ours, then you could simply forward mail to whatever address targets your WebFaction mailbox.
