Is it possible to not execute rm -r * ?

No, this isn't possible.

One thing you could do, though, is to install safe-rm locally under your account (in $HOME/bin) and then put $HOME/bin first on the PATH.

The most common solution is just to keep good backups of all of your files, though. Mistakes happen, but they are (or should be) relatively rare, and good backups keep you safe from not only careless mistakes but also from hardware failures.
