this doc sez: "Django automatically includes ... and the django admin media" but i am getting 404 errors on paths like /static/admin/css/base.css. i have specified STATIC_ROOT and STATIC_URL in my settings.py; is that clobbering something?

It shouldn't clobber anything. Just be sure that you've got your site configured to serve your static media (i.e., the app that corresponds to STATIC_ROOT) on the correct URL path (i.e., the path component of STATIC_URL), and that you've followed the steps to collect your static media into your static app directory.
