HI there

The pre-installed version of ImageMagick on my machine (web209) is 6.2.8, which is now very old (pre-2007). The current unix binary version is 6.8.5.

I want to use the -extent option with a background colour, but (I discovered eventually) in this older version, it can only insert black background colours.

How can I update to a newer version?

Also, can I suggest that you supply a newer version as default.

You can install any version of ImageMagick you need by building it from source in your home directory. Instructions for building ImageMagick are available in step 1 and 2 here: Installing ImageMagick and RMagick

The default version is the one supplied in the CentOS5 package repository. We can't update it globally, since other packages depend on it. Our 64-bit CentOS6 servers have v6.5.4, so if that version meets your needs, you could migrate your account to one of those servers.

Hope that helps!
