Is there any easy way to install open office without root access? I attempted this to install the rpm in my user directory, but to no avail.

There isn't an easy way to do it, but it can be done.

Download the files using:

wget http://openoffice.mirrors.tds.net/pub/openoffice/stable/3.2.1/OOo_3.2.1_Linux_x86_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz

Extract the files using:

tar -zvxf OOo_3.2.1_Linux_x86_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz

Change to the RPMS directory by entering:

cd OOO320_m18_native_packed-1_en-US.9502/RPMS/

Enter the following:

mkdir -p ~/local/lib/rpm

Enter:

rpm -Uvh --prefix=/home/{YOUR_USERNAME}/bin/ --root /home/{YOUR_USERNAME}/local --dbpath /home/{YOUR_USERNAME}/local/lib/rpm --nodeps *.rpm

Be sure to replace {YOUR_USERNAME} with the correct value. This will force openoffice to install in ~/bin.

The headless version of OpenOffice v2 is pre-installed on all of our servers, so if that version meets your needs you can spare yourself the pain of building it yourself :)

What exactly can we accomplish with OpenOffice headless pre-installed ? Like Convert ppt to images via the command line ?

That is what it is used for mostly. I think it can do some messaging and document storing tasks as well, similar to Google apps.
