I have followed the instructions to setup Perl/CPAN from http://docs.webfaction.com/software/perl.html and I'm attempting to install Catalyst by running the command cpan install Catalyst::Devel. Originally it was failing (killed) due to too much memory use. I have stopped all unnecessary processes and have managed to get the command to run through to completion (failure).

One thing that concerns me is that twice during the install I am faced with the message You are not allowed to write to the directory '/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8'... Should we try to re-execute the autoinstall process with 'sudo'? - obviously this won't work so I selected n and then y to the following message Should we try to install the required module(s) anyway?

I'm on web217. Is this is a problem with my Perl setup and can it be fixed?

I've tried installing Catalyst in a test account on Web217, using our documented procedures, and didn't have any luck. Some Perl modules just do not want to play along.

I was able to work around it by installing perlbrew to create an isolated perl environment, and then installing Catalyst into that.

I think the following commands should get you going:

mkdir ~/tmp
export TMPDIR=~/tmp
\curl -L http://install.perlbrew.pl | bash
export PATH=$HOME/perl5/perlbrew/bin:$PATH
perlbrew install-patchperl
perlbrew --notest install perl-5.18.0
perlbrew switch perl-5.18.0
curl -L http://cpanmin.us | perl - App::cpanminus
cpanm --force Template
cpanm Catalyst::Devel

Hope that helps!
