At http://docs.webfaction.com/software/django/config.html#upgrading-your-django-libraries it documents manually installnigf an updated django in webfaction.

Is it valid to use 'pip' instead? I have a requirements.txt file used to manage libraries, and would prefer to stick with just one package management solution (if python lets me).

Sure, if you want to remote the Django libraries we've provided and use pip to install/upgrade it instead, go right ahead. You'll want to use the procedure under "To use pip to install to a specific application" in our pip doc.

Hope that helps!
