I have two domains. Lets call them: mydomain.com and my-other-domain.com

I need to create few mailboxes for mydomain.com users and few mailboxes for my-other-domain.com users.

  • Every user should configure the correct domain in the email-client setting. (mail.mydomain.com for some and mail.my-other-domain.com for the others)
  • Outgoing emails must be from the correct domain name, so email receivers will see that email arrived from user.name@mydomain.com. (and not from mailbexname@mail.webfaction.com)

Can I create the mail boxes so each will point to a specific domain only?

How should I create the MX record for such a setup?

Does using a custom MX (point mail.mydomain.com to mail.webfaction.com IP) will take care of the "sender" email field?

Please advise...

mail.webfaction.com is not a MX server. It's a IMAP/POP server.

If you want your customers to have "mail.mydomain.com" as their incoming IMAP/POP mail server, then:

  • Add "mail.mydomain.com" as a subdomain in our control panel, and
  • Click CNAME as the hosting option, and point it at mail.webfaction.com.

Your outgoing emails will be sent with whatever address you've configured your email clients to use. It's not affected by the MX records for your domain.

Does this work for the SMTP server as well? For example, would it work if I pointed smtp.mydomain.com to smtp.webfaction.com?

Yes, that would work.

Isn't this going to cause certificate problems?

The client is likely going to (rightly) complain that the SSL certificate belongs to mail.webfaction.com while it is connecting to mail.mydomain.com

Yes if you are using SSL for send or receiving you will receive a certificate error since it is inherited. If you are not using SSL it should work without error.
