What could cause a .htaccess file to become corrupted? It happened several times, with different websites, that a modified .htaccess file caused a 500 error. Unexplainable, a letter s was attached at the bottom of the file, causing the trouble.

.htaccess files are popular targets for hacks, so if you have some compromised plugin or theme, then it's possible that it's happening that way. That said, simply appending an "s" to a file seems an unlikely hack.

It's also possible that you have some legitimate plugin that modifies .htaccess for whatever reason, and an error in that plugin is causing the problem.
