As the question says: can I use Vagrant boxes on Webfaction, or are there restrictions that would stop me doing that?

It is not possible to install a virtual server in a shared hosting account since the virtualbox dependency requires administrator access and this is not available to users.

Is there a vagrant environment that is close to webfaction's default setup? It would be very useful for webfaction to publish a 'webfaction' vagrant environment to assist developers by providing a default local environment. This would reduce support calls to Webfaction as there will be fewer misconfigurations caused by differences in local vs remote server environments which are a pain to troubleshoot. I would also see this as offering an additional USP for webfaction to market its services as the ultimate developer host.

What @johnkingeu proposed would be really useful. I was also looking for a vagrant box with nearly the same environment that webfaction's setup and it would be really convenient to have one ready to use.

+1 - please create a vagrant box on https://atlas.hashicorp.com/ for all of us... ;)

actually - a centos kickstart file would be a great resource at very least - will submit a support ticket

Anyone out there know of a provisioning script for vagrant that comes close to WebFaction hosting?
