You can update your Ghost application using the following steps:

  1. Back up the necessary files and data just in case as per "Backing Up" at http://docs.ghost.org/installation/upgrading/
  2. Fill in your application name and run the following script:

    # Set the name of your ghost application here
    APPNAME=ghostapp

    git clone https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost.git ~/newghost
    cd ~/newghost
    find -maxdepth 1 -type f -exec cp {} ~/webapps/$APPNAME/ghost \;
    rm -rf ~/webapps/$APPNAME/ghost/core
    cp -R core ~/webapps/$APPNAME/ghost
    cp -R content/themes/casper ~/webapps/$APPNAME/ghost/content/themes
    cd ~/webapps/$APPNAME/ghost
    ../bin/npm install --production
    ../bin/stop && ../bin/start
    rm -rf ~/newghost
    #

I've installed ghost as an npm module on Webfaction and it's easy to upgrade now (npm update is all I need). See https://github.com/mozz100/ghost-on-webfaction for details and a one-click webfaction install script.

I'd very much appreciate comments on this and whether it seems like a sensible way to do things.

Seems sensible to me.

The webfaction UI currently maintains the 0.4 version for one-click install. Instead of grabbing it from ghost, you could also create a new app and migrate your content over.
