This is not a question, but useful info for the Webfaction community. I am using Meteor to serve my application and was trying to do some SEO. Meteor has an add-on package called Spiderable which serves the HTML to search engine crawlers. Unfortunately, Spiderable requires a websocket connection to function properly, which is difficult to do with Webfaction because they route everything through port 80 with Nginx on their servers (I think that is explained properly). Anyways, in order to create a websocket connection with your Meteor app, you need to create an initial settings file per this thread:

This will allow spiderable to properly serve your html to search engines.

To fix this issue, create a file in your app (Meteor project) directory called 'settings.json' and add the following to it:

{
    "initURL" : "http://{{ your server's IP }}:{{ Meteor app port }}/"
}

Then, when you start Meteor, add the option '--settings settings.json' to the command line, so your start command would be something like:

userhome $: meteor --settings settings.json -p {{ Meteor app port }}
permanent link
