Hi there,

I'm trying to to use virtualenvwrapper on a Webfaction server for one of my Django apps but am running into difficulty. Here are the steps i took.

  1. I did $ pip install virtualenv virtualenvwrapper, which worked.
  2. I edited my ~/.bash_profile file to include the lines export WORKON_HOME=$HOME/.virtualenvs export VIRTUALENVWRAPPER_PYTHON=/usr/local/bin/python2.7 if [ -f $HOME/bin/virtualenvwrapper.sh ]; then source $HOME/bin/virtualenvwrapper.sh fi
  3. I did source ~/.bash_profile.
  4. I did mkvirtualenv gtfs_explorer_1 and got the following error message: New python executable in gtfs_explorer_1/bin/python2.7 Not overwriting existing python script gtfs_explorer_1/bin/python (you must use gtfs_explorer_1/bin/python2.7) Installing setuptools, pip... Any suggestions?

This is a known bug in 1.11 Try installing a lesser version.

I deleted my pip-build directory in ~/tmp, pip uninstalled virtualenv and virtualenvwrapper, and then did pip install -I virtualenv==1.10 and pip install virtualenvwrapper. Then i was able to create a virtual environment without a problem. Hallelujah! Thanks!

OK, i followed the instructions at https://community.webfaction.com/questions/4253/simple-virtualenv-usage-with-django but got the same error.

More specifically:

  1. I reinstalled pip, virtualenv, and virtualenvwrapper according to the instructions.
  2. I edited $HOME/.bash_profile to this

    # .bash_profile

    # Get the aliases and functions
    if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then
            . ~/.bashrc
    fi

    # Path settings
    export PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH"
    export NODE_PATH="$HOME/webapps/node_app/lib/node_modules:$NODE_PATH"
    export PATH="$HOME/webapps/node_app/bin:$PATH"
    export TEMP="$HOME/tmp"

    # Python settings
    PYTHONVER=2.7
    PYTHON=python${PYTHONVER}
    alias python=${PYTHON}
    export PYTHON=${PYTHON}

    # Virtualenv and virtualenvwrapper settings
    export WORKON_HOME=$HOME/.virtualenvs
    export VIRTUALENVWRAPPER_TMPDIR="$WORKON_HOME/tmp"
    export VIRTUALENVWRAPPER_PYTHON=/usr/local/bin/$PYTHON
    source $HOME/bin/virtualenvwrapper.sh
    export PIP_VIRTUALENV_BASE=$WORKON_HOME
    export PIP_RESPECT_VIRTUALENV=true

    1. I got the following error upon creating a new virtual environment:

      [araichev@web362 ~]$ mkvirtualenv gtfs_explorer_1 NOTE: Virtual environments directory /home/araichev/.virtualenvs does not exist. Creating... New python executable in gtfs_explorer_1/bin/python2.7 Also creating executable in gtfs_explorer_1/bin/python Installing setuptools, pip...
