Hey! I'm new to webfaction, and i'm trying to install python's module Pygame. Since I cannot use yum to install it, i've downloaded the tar.gz file with wget, extracted it, and followed the steps "Installing Packages with setup.py" mentioned in webfaction docs. The thing is that Pygame requires some dependencies to be installed, such as:

python-devel SDL_image-devel SDL_mixer-devel SDL_ttf-devel SDL-devel smpeg-devel numpy subversion portmidi-devel

I have absolutely no clue on how to install these without using yum.

Here's a screenshot that might be clearer:

Maybe there is a way to be able to use yum install that i'm not aware of?

Hello,

We have some discussion on this here:

https://community.webfaction.com/questions/315/how-do-i-install-pygame

Are you able to try the suggested solutions there?

Hi! I did that actually, that's why you can see "SDL : found 1.2.14", but regardless of that, the rest of the dependencies are still missing.

Should I open a ticket for this, or should I just wait for a kind soul to come up with a solution here? :(

You may build it if you download and build the various dependencies first. Since it is an older package it needs an older version of SDL, I was able to get the most basic install to work using these steps,

mkdir ~/src

cd ~/src
wget http://www.libsdl.org/release/SDL-1.2.15.tar.gz
tar -xf SDL-1.2.15.tar.gz
cd SDL-1.2.15
./configure --prefix=$HOME
make
make install

cd ~/src
wget http://www.pygame.org/ftp/pygame-1.9.1release.tar.gz
tar -xf pygame-1.9.1release.tar.gz
cd pygame-1.9.1release
python2.7 setup.py install --prefix=$HOME

The installer warns that if you want a given function (say JPEG) you need to build the respective library first.
