I would like to set up authentication for a website using SSL client certificates. Something along the lines of this. Originally I tried it on a Static/CGI/PHP-5.5 application, but some of the directives do not work in .htaccess files (not to mention mod_ssl was not enabled).

The suggestion for solving this was that I should try something like a mod_wsgi application, since that provides a full Apache installation with full access to httpd.conf right in the application. This sounded like a good plan, but then I hit two more road blocks. First, mod_ssl still was not loaded, and it was not even available for me to load it. Second, I came to the realization that by the time the traffic reaches the application, it has already been converted to non-SSL. Even if I did a from-scratch Apache install with mod_ssl, it would never even get the opportunity to touch anything SSL (if I understand how things are set up).

I would still like to get this working, if at all possible. Is there any other way to do this sort of authentication?
