I'm playing around with using the WebSockets custom application (using NodeJS + Faye). Seems I can only get my test application to work by using SSL. If I don't have SSL enabled, I get HTTP 400 errors from the server, and the client switches to using long-polling.

Simply changing the website to use SSL, and changing client javascript to set websocket server to https makes every start working.

Is the SSL requirement an Nginx thing, or, hopefully, is there some error in configuration on my part that I'm not doing? Just curious why this is so..

SSL should not be required. Are you checking the node log/output when you receive these errors? Does that provide any more detail?
