Is there a way to serve a custom app via the existing Nginx? If so, how?

Yes, this is exactly what the "Custom Application (listening on port)" application is designed to do.

When you create an application of this type and attach it to a website record, this causes a proxy_pass directive to be added to the Nginx configuration which simply passes the HTTP request on to your custom app and then returns the response to the visitor.
