I cannot seem to operate tar, what's wrong with this?

[xxx@web34 webapps]$ tar -cvzpf zzz.tgz fff/
tar: zzz.tgz: Cannot open: Permission denied
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
fff/
fff/license.txt
[xxx@web34 webapps]$

There is nothing wrong with your command - the wrong part is the directory you are running it from. Apparently you do not have permissions to create files in the "xxx" folder.

You could try running instead:

tar -cvzpf ~/zzz.tgz fff/

This would create the archive file in your home directory.
