How do I enable php exec()?

I am using a php system that uses ffmpeg and it requires exec(); The system has a configuration checker which reports that exec is not available.

PHP version: 5.3.29 PHP exec() enabled and working?: No Please ensure that the PHP exec() function is enabled and that exec() can run FFmpeg commands.

I tried to look for a php.ini file but couldn't find one so I'm not sure how to enable this.

It should be installed and available. When I check using a new PHP5.4 (the lowest version new apps can be) and use the following code, it works.

if(function_exists('exec')) {
    echo "exec is enabled";
}

What app are you using which is showing that error? Have you tried using a new app using the latest version of PHP?
