WebFaction
Community site: login faq

I'm at a bit of a loss. I'm using Webfaction for email, but another DNS provider for DNS.

With other providers, there's a simple page that includes all the values for DKIM, SPF, and MX. With WebFaction, it's kind of a guessing game. I found out the mx records (I think, but there's no way to check them); and I entered what I assume is a good SPF txt record. No idea where to get the DKIM data, however.

This could be a lot simpler. Where do I go to make sure I've entered all the right data into my DNS records?

Hi there,

The information for our MX records when an external DNS provider is used are located in our knowledge base:

https://docs.webfaction.com/user-guide/domains.html#using-your-own-name-server

Whereas some SPF record advise can be found in this article:

https://docs.webfaction.com/user-guide/email.html?highlight=spf#spam-protection

At this time, our SMTP server does not support DKIM.

I tend to agree with Ken K

I've read the docs but they dont include precise example values

just a very verbose general discussion

I dont need that

I need examples of values

its a guessing game right now

for instance

on Cloudflare

which is correct in Domains on Webfaction?

v=spf1 include:demo.com -all or v=spf1 a:smtp.webfaction.com ~all

which is correct in say, Cloudflare?

TXT myname v=spf1 a:smtp.webfaction.com ~all or TXT myname v=spf1 include:demo.com -all

and SPF myname v=spf1 a:smtp.webfaction.com ~all or SPF myname v=spf1 include:demo.com -all

We don't have any comprehensive guides for setting up DNS on other providers' systems - those systems are generally documented by the provider that runs them.

What we do have documented on our end are the values you should typically use when creating DNS records in other providers' systems, as previously mentioned by NIck above:

That said, we could do a better job of putting that information in one place, so I'll bring that to the attention of our documentation team.
