I would like to run an sbt application on my WebFaction shared hosting environment. Has anyone had any luck with this, and if so, would you care to share the approach?

Installing sbt is pretty simple.

  • download the latest tgz version from https://www.scala-sbt.org/download.html, using wget or curl,
  • extract it using the tar xvzf command,
  • move the new sbt directory somewhere like for example ~/opt/, so you will have ~/opt/sbt/
  • set sbt's bin directory to your $PATH, by running export PATH=$HOME/opt/sbt/bin:$PATH
  • run sbt
