Question:

To have "domainname.com" and "www.domainname.com" working in the same way, do I have to create separate websites for "domainname.com" and its "www" subdomain, served by the same application? Is there a more concise way to do it without the extra website?

Thanks.

You can do it with a single website - just select multiple subdomains when editing the site. You can select multiple items by holding the CTRL key (or the Command key on a Mac) while clicking with your mouse.

Hope that helps!
