Is there a way to compress an entire folder of images (for web use) in one go via SSH?

The folder is very large - contains a few thousand images and currently weighs in at over 7GB. Assuming there is a way to do this, is the size of this folder likely to cause any problems?

Thanks in advance for the help...

mogrify : https://imagemagick.org/script/mogrify.php - I think imagemagick is already installed on all webfaction servers.
