Community site: login faq

I'm feeling like a complete idiot after struggling for hours to set up one simple email/mailbox account on webfaction and failing to gain access to that account from Thunderbird. I've gone over the documentation, but I'm obviously missing something and I could use a little help.

(names were changed to protect the innocent...) I've set up a mailbox through the control panel called something like "name_" and gave it a password. Then, I set up an email account with the name "name" under the main subdomain and pointed it at the mailbox "name_". That should be all one has to do to set up a new email account, right?

Once done with that, I moved over to Thunderbird to set up the account there. In the create new account dialog flow, it asks for my name, username and password. I give them the name, the username "name" and the password - both the same as the username and password on the email account.

After I push the "Create Account" button, I get a warning that the server is insecure. I'd love to be able to make it secure, so if you know of any tips on that, I'd be most grateful. After I say "sure, go ahead and create the terribly insecure account", I get an error saying that "Configuration could not be verified -- is the username or password wrong?"

Everything seems set up properly to me, but I have to be doing something wrong. Please let me know where I might have strayed off the path of the righteous email setter upper.

Thanks, ~Israel

Login with the mailbox name and the password you set for it.

Hi,

I've set up a mailbox through the control panel called something like "name_" and gave it a password. Then, I set up an email account with the name "name" under the main subdomain and pointed it at the mailbox "name_". That should be all one has to do to set up a new email account, right?account, right?

Yes. That is correct.

Once done with that, I moved over to Thunderbird to set up the account there. In the create new account dialog flow, it asks for my name, username and password. I give them the name, the username "name" and the password - both the same as the username and password on the email account.

For user name, use the name of the mailbox, not the email address.
