I have ACLs set up for some users to be able to write to subfolders. However, since they own the files that they upload, I can't overwrite them, nor (at this point) reset the ACLs to give myself write privileges - even though I'm the owner of the containing directory.

For instance, imagine ~/webapps/app/folder1 with the following ACLs:

$ getfacl ~/webapps/app/
# owner: [me]
# group: [me]
user::rwx
user:apache:r-x
user:nginx:r-x
user:[me]:rwx
user:[user1]:rwx
user:[user2]:--x
group::r-x
mask::rwx
other::---
default:user::rwx
default:user:apache:r-x
default:user:nginx:r-x
default:group::r-x
default:mask::r-x
default:other::---

$ getfacl ~/webapps/app/folder1/
# file: mitx
# owner: [user1]
# group: [me]
user::rwx
user:apache:r-x
user:nginx:r-x
group::r-x
mask::r-x
other::---
default:user::rwx
default:user:apache:r-x
default:user:nginx:r-x
default:group::r-x
default:mask::r-x
default:other::---

Is there a special flag for "setfacl" that'll let me say, in essence, "I own this directory, dammit, now let me set the ACLs recursively no matter who owns the file(s) within it"?

You can submit a support ticket for us to fix the permissions. To stop this from happening in the future run chmod,

chmod g+s $HOME/webapps/application

This is outlined in step 6 here,

Note that setting the setgid bit (via "chmod g+s") does not give a non-owner the ability to change the ACLs of a file. That can be done only by the user who owns the file.

Hi, despite following the instructions and running Step 6 when granting permissions (and therefore being an owner of a folder) - I am still unable to grant access to the folder to a new user I created because there are files there that are created by another user I gave permission to. What gives?

Please open a support ticket so we can make you the owner of the files.
