Is there some way to reset your server to a completely fresh state, just as it was when you first got it?

Would it be safe to just delete the apps on it and then delete everything in the home folder? Will the standard folders be recreated?

To reset your account you'll want to:

  1. Remove all applications, sites, domains and databases
  2. Delete the 'lib' and 'bin' directories in your home directory
  3. Recreate the directories:

    mkdir -p ~/lib/python2.{3,4,5,6,7}
    mkdir -p ~/bin

  4. Remove your cron jobs:

    crontab -r

That's it. You're account has been reset :)4.

Superb, thanks :)

I assume there are things you could do to your account that wouldn't be reset by this procedure though, right?

Nope. Everything you can do to your account can be "reset" by doing this*. Anything more destructive than this has to be done by a member of staff.

  • Almost. You could delete everything in your account, wait 10 days and then request a now-expired backup.

What about things such as cronjobs and permissions?

Ah, cronjobs. Forgot about those. I've updated my post with information on doing that.

As for permissions: since you've just deleted and recreated everything all permissions should be back to normal.
