Basically I'm just posting this in case any other newbs like me ever have a similar problem.

I just installed django using the control panel, but when I tried to run "django-admin.py startproject mysite" it wouldn't work. Then when I tried to import django from inside the interactive shell, that didn't work either.

Turns out typing "python" was invoking python 2.4, when django is installed with Python 2.7. And, so to change the python alias to point to the 2.7 version I just had to type "alias python="python2.7".
