Im currently test driving the APE project but is kind of memory hungry. Idle it takes 36.6MB of RAM. What other solutions could i try?

Despite its memory usage, the most popular Comet server still seems to be APE.

There is also a free community edition of StreamHub that runs on linux, but I don't know anything specific about it.

Also, while not an ideal solution, upgrading your hosting plan to add additional memory is always an option as well.

StreamHub Max Concurrent Users is 10 on the community version :(

Ouch. That's pretty limiting indeed.

Not flexible, every channel is an html file that needs to hard coded :-(

Do you know how I could install Tornado here? I tried the regular install but it needs /etc/ permissions

You will need to compile it in your home directory.

Another option might be the Nginx HTTP Push Module. Some supporting discussion is available here.

I now use Django + Node.js + ZeroMQ + Faye for comet applications.

A full installation and discussion is available on this related community post.
