I'd like to have a Graphical User Interface to my webfaction command line. I'd like to run Python's idle GUI and other GUI apps in my windows client ExtraPutty XTERM/ssh session. I seem to be missing a definition for $Display. Here's what happens when I say idle to the command prompt:

$ idle
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/local/bin/idle", line 5, in <module>
    main()
  File "/usr/local/lib/python2.7/idlelib/PyShell.py", line 1389, in main
    root = Tk(className="Idle")
  File "/usr/local/lib/python2.7/lib-tk/Tkinter.py", line 1685, in init
    self.tk = _tkinter.create(screenName, baseName, className, interactive, wantobjects, useTk, sync, use)
_tkinter.TclError: no display name and no $DISPLAY environment variable

Am I on the right track? If so, how do i set $Display and what should it be? ExtraPutty emulates XTERM.

Thanks for the help.

Love and peace,

Joe

Hi,

I am sorry but setting $DISPLAY variable means running a X server.

I am afraid that is not possible on our servers.

Dear Neerav,

Please, can you tell me why it is not possible to run an X server on WebFaction servers?

Thanks for the help.

Love and peace,

Joe

As a web host, we don't have a functioning X server configuration on our servers, since it's simply not needed for web hosting. If you want to try to build your own X server and run it as a custom application, you're free to do so, but we can't provide any support or assistance for that.

Thanks to both of you for the info.

I'll try to investigate what it means to build (maybe use an open source?) X server, and run it as a custom app without support.

I always feel well supported by WebFaction. Thanks again.

Love and peace,

Joe
