Although this is not something I need immediately, it would be nice to be able to automate the setup process using Fabric. Is this possible at the moment?

You can definitely deploy your projects via a Fabric script. If you feel incline, you could take a look at the API. That will allow you to create what you are looking for, via python and xmlrpclib.
