I followed the instructions for generating an SSH key here: http://docs.webfaction.com/user-guide/access.html#connecting-with-ssh

But when I try to connect PuTTY gives me the error 'Server unexpectedly closed network connection'

Any suggestions?

Puttygen sometimes puts additional line breaks in the keys it generates which causes the key not to work as you see above.

So, generating it on the server and then downloading it to your computer should solve the problem.

Hope that helps!

How do you generate it on the server and why does the documentation not say that?

You can use the command "ssh-keygen -t dsa" to generate it on the server.

The documentation does not say that it does not happen in every case.

That didn't work either, but now instead of a message box with the previous error, it's a message in terminal window saying 'Server refused our key.'

I followed the steps done here: http://linux-sxs.org/networking/openssh.putty.html, but I also renamed the private key file on the server to authorized_keys, to match the docs here.

Any idea?

We would have to take a better look at the generated public and the private key.

We can do that if you file a support ticket using https://help.webfaction.com

Hope that helps!
