Sorry, bit of a noob here.

I thought I followed the "getting started with django" directions to load an existing django app, but I'm getting the error message

Error: Can't find the file 'settings.py' in the directory containing 'manage.py'. It appears you've customized things. You'll have to run django-admin.py, passing it your settings module. (If the file settings.py does indeed exist, it's causing an ImportError somehow.)

There is of course a settings.py file in that directory. My wsgi file has the line below, though I'm not sure if it's relevant.

os.environ['DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE'] = '<appname>.settings'

Obviously, <appname> is replaced with the name of my app in the actual file :p

I'm assuming I've failed to configure something or other... can anyone help me out?

It is possible that your settings.py is causing an ImportError. Try to cd into the project directory (where settings.py is) and run "python -c 'import settings'", this should give you the error.
