I'm trying to follow those instructions for remote database access but it's not working out so far. I don't have a specific machine (webXX) so I have tried to do this without much success.

ssh -L 3306:127.0.0.1:3306 my_username@my_username.webfactional.com
...
bind: Address already in use
channel_setup_fwd_listener: cannot listen to port: 3306
Could not request local forwarding.

Thanks

"bind: Address already in use" means that something is already listening on port 3306 locally. The most probable explanation is that you are running a MySQL server instance on your local machine.

To work around it, you can either:

  • Stop your local MySQL server before establishing your tunnel, or
  • Use a different port on the local end of your tunnel, eg: ssh -L 3307:127.0.0.1:3306 user@user.webfactional.com

If you use the latter suggestion, then be sure to configure your local app or MySQL client to connect to the different port (3307 in my example).

Hope that helps!
