I'd like to set up a WebFaction account to evaluate the Plone product Listen (http://plone.org/products/listen). Looks as though I'll need to be able to access a mail server via a python script. Can I do this on a WebFaction account, and if so do I need to install my own mail server? If I need to install my own webserver, any suggestions as to which one?

You do not need to run your own mail server, and you don't need to run a Python script directly on the mail server.

You should be able to do what you need to do with our mail2script feature, documented here: Sending Mail to a Script

I've never used Listen, but based on the example you provided, I think you'll need to take the following steps:

  1. Install Listen and its dependencies as described in the Listen installation documentation.
  2. Copy your smtp2zope.py script to your ~/bin directory: cp smtp2zope.py ~/bin
  3. Create a new email address in the control panel with the following values:
    • Username: the first part of the email address for your list (before the @)
    • Subdomain: the second part of the email address for your list (after the @)
    • Script machine: your web server (where smtp2zope.py is)
    • Script path: /home/username/bin/smtp2zope.py http://127.0.0.1:XXXXX/path/to/list/manage_mailboxer YYYYY (replace XXXXX with the port assigned to your Zope app, and YYYYY with the maximum message size for your list)

Once that's done, mail you send to the address you created should be piped to the script and processed by Zope. Hope that helps!
