Hi:

I am trying to ssh to webfactional from my company however it seems like my corporate firewall is blocking it.

I searched the internet and follow the instruction at http://digitalpbk.blogspot.com/2009/05/ssh-proxy-windows-linux-orkut-bypass.html . And now i managed to connect ssh to webfactional via Putty in windows.

However I need to make it work in linux and the linux method recommended by the author does not work for me. The following is what the author suggested. ssh -C2qTnN -D 9090 username@remote_machine.com

The above command will prompt me to key in user name and password, however it never manage to log me in afterwards. It takes forever to response.

Then I follow the instruction given by http://www.zeitoun.net/articles/ssh-through-http-proxy/start . However this requires that the ssh daemon in the server listening to port 443. Does the ssh daemon in our server listen to this port?

Is there anyway I can ssh to outside server from corporate firewall or VPN? I am pretty sure i can do this since i manage to do it in Putty.

Are you creating an SSH tunnel on the hosting machine to listen on port 9090? This shouldn't work, as ports aren't opened for external connections on the web servers.

Can you check for sure if the SSH port is blocked by your corporate firewall? Run "telnet username.webfactional.com 22" on your Linux machine and provide the output.

Actually i dun quite understand the cmd ssh -C2qTnN -D 9090 username@webfactional.com

Here are the output when i telnet...

kentzo@kentzo-desktop:~/.ssh$ telnet kentzo.webfactional.com 22 Trying 184.172.207.76... Connected to kentzo.webfactional.com. Escape character is '^]'. SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_4.3

Connection closed by foreign host.

After which the cursor keeps blinking and then only the connection closed by foreign host. Looks like i can connect to it. Am I?

Yes, it looks like it's not blocked at your firewall. Can you try connecting normally via SSH? The command you should run is: ssh username@username.webfactional.com

Yes. I think after i removed some of the configuration files under .ssh folder eg. config, known_host proxyauth files, i manage to log in using normal ssh. Those files are added in last time when i am trying to using tunneling method to access github. Maybe i have mis configuration there. Anyway the problem is solved. Thanks for your help!
