Community site: login faq

hi - i just signed on with webfaction. i'm going to be building a few sites. i'm only using wordpress for the time being, and i'd like to be able to have a hidden test environment to develop, while i keep an "under construction" page up. i added an index.html to my wordpress app to override it for now. and i've been searching everywhere for advice on how to go about this.

i was looking on this page from wordpress: http://codex.wordpress.org/Test_Driving_WordPress#Htaccess_Resources

i'm thinking about just creating a subdomain staging.mydomain.com, and then copying the wordpress install there and hiding it. my question is, is this the best way to go about it, and if so, wordpress mentions creating an .htcaccess file, which i already have. is it ok to simply add the lines that wordpress provides to that file?

thanks for any insight.

Yes, you can use .htaccess to limit access to your app. I have not seen the Wordpress documentation for it, but we already have a guide for it here:
http://docs.webfaction.com/software/static.html#password-protecting-a-directory-with-a-static-cgi-php-app
which you can use to setup restricted access.

thank you. that was exactly what i wanted to do. an additional question then. i have an instance of wordpress set up on mydomain.com/test, which has restricted access. when it's ready i want to just be at the root. will i be able to easily transfer my site?

Yes, you just need to edit your site record and change the URL path from /test to /.

Does it usually take a while for the wordpress instance to transfer when you change the directory like that? I moved an instance from / to /test and I'm getting a 404 error when I try to go to mydomain.com/test. It's been about 5 minutes and I've cleared my cache.

I just looked up your account and checked your site - I'm not seeing a 404 at your /test URL. Can you try again?
