I am trying to install the Java Runtime (JRE) on my Webfaction account according to the instructions listed here: http://docs.webfaction.com/software/java.html

I followed the instructions carefully and everything appeared to work correctly but when I try the final step to test the application I get an error.

I test the application by doing this: You can verify the installation worked by entering java -version and pressing Enter.

This is the error I receive: $ java --version Unrecognized option: --version Could not create the Java virtual machine.

What would be the best way to troubleshoot this? Where might I have gone wrong?

As mentioned in the ticket you opened, you do have it installed correctly. Your command just has one too many dashes in front of version.
