This may be an easy question but in looking through the QA and the old community forum including this one which is very similar to my problem:

Django Custom 500 Error results in Internal Server Error

My template folder is set up correctly:

TEMPLATE_DIRS = ('/home/user/webapps/django/templates/',)

i have a template in that folder which one of my views uses without a problem. However, when a 500 or 404 error is raised, the web-browsers default pages show up instead of my own 404.html & 500.html pages which is just this:

<!-- Created: 06/01/2012 by esp384 -->
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional/EN">
<html>
    <head>
        <title>Server Error</title>
    </head>
    <body>
        <h1>Sorry!</h1>
        <p>Sorry, the server has encountered an error.</p>
    </body>
</html>

What am i doing wrong? thanks so much for any help you can give!

Have you tried clearing your browser cache or try a different browser completely?

If you don't feel comfortable posting a url that we can check here, then maybe open a ticket for us to look into it further for you. https://help.webfaction.com/

And there are 404.html and 500.html templates in the root of that folder? Do other templates in the app work properly?

hi Guys, thanks very much for your answers and suggestions. it does look like a browser cache issue as i tried a different browser and everything works well as expected. thank you very much again!
