I followed the tutorial referenced in this thread and successfully installed node and (I believe) set up a custom app listening on a port but I cannot get a response on the new port.

Am I missing any steps or are there other steps I can take to debug?

Your application needs to be added to a site in your control panel. Edit your site record in your control panel, and add the node application to a url path of your choice (such as /node). Then, you should be able to acess your node application at yourdomain.com/node/. You do not need to designate the port; the port is only used internally.

Just wanted to add to this that the above answer is indeed correct, I unfortunately managed to leave out this crucial step when I wrote the tutorial. I'm updating the tutorial now and wanted to say thanks for catching this and letting me know!
