As of recently, I'm using a single nginx to serve my two websites. Occasionally the nginx server just dies and I don't know why. I would write a cron job which restarts the nginx process, but I feel like that's starting at the wrong end.

What could cause this behavior? And how do I fix it?

Try increasing the loglevel to the log or using gdb to debug to get more info about the problem.
