I am trying to figure out how to follow these instructions with WebFaction's Interface. http://suite.opengeo.org/opengeo-docs/usermanual/installation/linux/geoserver-centos.html I tried adding application by pasting http://yum.opengeo.org/centos/5/i386/OpenGeo.repo into the custom app URL - but that was just a shot in the dark.

geoserver is a tomcat app. So

  • create a "custom app running on port"
  • install tomcat (see below)
  • pop the geoserver war into tomcat's webapps's directory

Installing tomcat:

$ wget http://mirror.cogentco.com/pub/apache/tomcat/tomcat-7/v7.0.53/bin/apache-tomcat-7.0.53.tar.gz # or whatever version you'd like to have
2014-04-15 10:18:45 (1.64 MB/s) - “apache-tomcat-7.0.53.tar.gz” saved [8780629/8780629]
$ tar xzf apache-tomcat-7.0.53.tar.gz
$ cd apache-tomcat-7.0.53
$ mv * ~/webapps/tomcat7/
$ cd ..
$ rmdir apache-tomcat-7.0.53

You'll need to edit tomcat's conf/server.xml so that the port matches the assigned custom app port. The part that you need to edit looks like this:

<Connector port="CUSTOM_PORT_HERE" protocol="HTTP/1.1"
           connectionTimeout="20000" />

It's whichever port was assigned by the Control Panel to the "Custom Application (listening on port)" application that you created as the first step. You can see your applications and their assigned ports here:

When you click on the associated application name, its assigned port will be displayed. Hope that helps!

I am sorry but the app lists that it requires superuser permissions:

We don't give root access on our servers, they also don't seem to list any ways to install from source.
