So I have completed a new wordpress site locally on MAMP...now I want to install the new database and upload wp to server... What are the best steps to get my new site up and running on a new domain? I do have other wordpress installs in my account but I have never uploaded databases locally to webfaction. Thanks.

The steps are,

  1. Make a database than export/import following this guide.

  2. Make a new 'Static/PHP/CGI' application and upload the WordPress files to it.

  3. Edit the wp-config.php file to reflect the new database host, username and password.

  4. Bind the site to a website record.

That should be it. If you run into any issues you may submit a support ticket and we will assist you.

1: Make a copy of your (local) wp database

mysqldump your_db_name -u your_user_name -p > your_db_name.sql

2: upload your_db_name.sql to your server

3: Log into server, change to the dir where you have uploaded your_db_name.sql and fire up mysql client

mysql -u your_user_name_on_server -p

4: at the mysql prompt

=> create database my_server_wp_database;

=> use my_server_wp_database.sql;

=> \. your_user_name_on_server.sql

=> quit

Try out the Wordpress Plugin DUPLICATOR http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/duplicator/

The Duplicator plugin is designed to give WordPress Administrators the ability to migrate a site from one location to another location in 3 easy steps. Just create a package, download it and install. No need to change all your settings and re-run import/export scripts. The plugin also serves as a simple backup utility.
