I recently had some large files that a friend wanted to transfer to me, so I created an account for him and gave him permission to write to my $HOME. However now the files are in his ownership and I cannot change them nor delete them. They are large, so I'd to delete them soon, but I don't know how I can change these permissions.

The ownership of files has to be changed by root. You can open a ticket here to get us to take a look at that for you.
